I like your last comment “is anyone listening”. I emailed Hines and asked if his work has been received in more mainstream circles of xianity and he said only those in college ministry have really responded to it (the choir).

In Hines defense, he didn’t really have the funding to do much statistical work. But your critique is right. Maybe he can get someone to fund him now that he’s made a good go of it on his own.

I agree w/ Hines too. The church should focus exclusively on college and high school age ministry domestically. This is the age children become adults and form conclusions about the world around them and their beliefs for the rest of their lives.

Additionally, this is the strategy Satan has taken – he’s using universities to populate the up and coming generations w/ people who believe God to be impotent or nonexistent. So, there must be something to it.

Jackie, I think Joel/this book are saying that campus ministry is cross-cultural by nature for older folk, to whom the college scene is a different culture.

In the traditional (and biblical–see Acts 1:8) understanding of missions, the campus scene isn’t a different culture. It’s a subculture. American college students speak the same language, share American values like individualism and materialism, and have the same social norms as non-college students. It is a subculture, like the ghetto. And for those who were once in college, the burning couches, scantily clad girls, and Natty Light consumption isn’t too foreign after all.

But this sounds like an interesting read, and I agree college ministry is crucial. I think if I didn’t find CBS my freshman year (and Neil!) I’d probably be a lonely, depressed, insignificant grad student with no relationships right now. I hope this book and our fellowship have a great impact in college ministry.

Thank you, Joel, for sharing this e-book link and review. I certainly am grateful that there existed a campus ministry where I could grow as a believer, and I was invited to it when I needed God desperately (although it took me a year to fully appreciate this ministry–and the friendships–there at my disposal).

Lately, I have been broadening my interest in and burden for cross-cultural campus ministry, and I am glad that it is a topic in this book. In fact, your blog title caught my attention because I’m thinking about blogging on what has been developing in my mind through these months in terms of the oft-overlooked mission fields in our own neighborhoods–and where my role may be long-term in regards to pursuing this field as well as encouraging current college students to consider starting their own cross-cultural ministries.

I’m looking forward to reading this e-book and hope to gain some rich insights from it. Thanks again for sharing this resource.

Joel, good stuff.

It is interesting that in the past people typically didn’t become xians after college, their lives were pretty set as to their spiritual outlook. Now they are ‘losing their religion’ in college — so it’s that much more in importance to offer something that they can turn to in college before it’s too late.

In this regard, we need to get a student org at KSU to advertise to those who were churched and would leave otherwise.

Scott and Keith:

If you are offended, I’d be glad to “consider backing off just a hair from these comments” as Scott puts it. Keep in mind that the easiest joke is the mean-spirited critical jab, which can be hurtful. I actually incriminate myself, as I know full well that I’d been biased against worship music by my personal tastes and hangups. So my goal in this blog was to get beyond mere ridicule (e.g., “singing nursery rhymes to Jesus”) to actually reconsider the worship service. Is there a biblical mandate to have a worship service? Is there a biblical maindate against musical instruments in church? I came to the conclusion that there is no such mandate, but that on the other hand we are free to do what we want. I then try to explain why Xenos in northeast Ohio has chosen not to have a worship service. Along the way I’m sure I got carried away with my tone, so I’m sorry if I was scornful and haughty.

I agree with you on several points, Scott. I don’t think the point is that we can’t sing, nor should it be that people who do sing are somehow retarded, because that would be wrong-headed. Furthermore, it would be wrong to say that “worship” can’t include singing, because that’s an unbiblical stand.

I do, however, think it’s fair to say that the traditional “worship service” is not biblically-mandated. I also think it’s fair to say it shouldn’t be extolled on the same level as, say, prayer, or spending time in God’s Word. It is a tradition, to be sure, and traditions are not evil at all, unless they somehow exclude God.

Is that not a good way of putting it?
